TASTING NOTES: Cassis, blackberry, and dark cherry as well as the tang of ocean breeze in the nose of Mortet’s 2008 Clos Vougeot lead to a continuation of salt-infused dark berries on a palate possessed of refined tannins and infectious juiciness. Admirable purity of fruit is sustained through a long, exuberant finish. What I don’t detect here is the sort of carnal depth I expect to find prominent from this cru, although a faint, peat-like smokiness as well as subtle toastiness and spiciness from barrel add nuance. Those especially enamored of singularly fruity Burgundian Pinot will find this even more satisfying than my score suggests. It ought certainly to hold up well for at least a decade, and let’s see on the way what sort of additional complexity if any it picks up. To give you an example of Mortet’s approach this year, he performed only three pigeages in the fermentative life of this Clos Vougeot, whose fruit was as usual the first harvested of the vintage. He was, he says, very conscious of trying to achieve a wine of finesse and buoyancy.

Domaine Denis Mortet

About Domaine Denis Mortet

Domaine Denis Mortet, nestled in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin in the revered Côte de Nuits of Burgundy, stands as a testament to the legacy of the late Denis Mortet. Founded by Denis, a highly respected winemaker, the domaine earned acclaim for its commitment to quality winemaking and its focus on the powerful and structured Pinot Noir wines emblematic of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation.

Following Denis Mortet's passing in 2006, his son Arnaud Mortet assumed the reins of the estate, ensuring the continuation of the family's winemaking heritage. The domaine's vineyard holdings, primarily in Gevrey-Chambertin, form the canvas upon which the Mortets paint their oenological masterpieces.

Pinot Noir, the red grape variety synonymous with Burgundy, takes center stage in the winemaking at Domaine Denis Mortet. The wines crafted from these grapes exhibit the classic Burgundian characteristics of red fruit, earthiness, and a distinct sense of terroir.

Denis Mortet, known for his meticulous winemaking approach, embraced both traditional and innovative techniques. The destemming of grapes and aging in French oak barrels were integral components of the winemaking process, reflecting a commitment to showcasing the unique nuances of each vineyard.

With a focus on limited production and low yields, Domaine Denis Mortet's wines became highly sought after by collectors and Burgundy connoisseurs. The combination of tradition, innovation, and a profound connection to the land solidified the estate's standing among the prestigious domaines of Burgundy.

Domaine Denis Mortet remains a symbol of Burgundian excellence, where the artistry of winemaking converges with a deep respect for terroir and a legacy that spans generations.
