TASTING NOTES: This wine is evolving into one of Mouton-Rothschild's greatest vintages. It boasts an inky purple color, as well as a powerful, blockbuster nose of explosively jammy cassis intermingled with toasty new oak, minerals, and spice. The wine is layered, with extraordinary depth, richness, glycerin, and length. This is undoubtedly the greatest Mouton since the 1986, with a more precocious, up-front character than that wine. A formidable tannin level combined with low acidity (the wine's PH is around 3.8), and magnificent layers of fruit suggest the 1995 will be approachable after bottling, but I expect it to close down (as most Mouton-Rothschilds do) after 6-7 years in the bottle, not to re-emerge for 15-20 years.

Château Mouton Rothschild

About Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild, nestled in the esteemed Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux's Médoc region, stands as an icon of winemaking excellence and aristocratic heritage. Acquired by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853, it was under the visionary leadership of Baron Philippe de Rothschild, beginning in 1922, that the estate ascended to the coveted status of a first-growth (Premier Grand Cru Classé) in the Bordeaux Classification system.

The terroir of Château Mouton Rothschild's vineyards, featuring well-drained gravel soils typical of Pauillac, provides an optimal foundation for the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot grapes. The meticulous winemaking process, marked by traditional methods and careful attention to detail, results in wines known for their concentration, richness, and remarkable aging potential.

A distinctive element of Château Mouton Rothschild is its tradition of commissioning original artwork for each vintage's label. Renowned artists, including luminaries like Picasso, Chagall, and Warhol, have contributed to this unique aspect of the estate's identity.

Château Mouton Rothschild's wines undergo a significant period of aging in oak barrels before bottling, a process that enhances their complexity and depth. The estate has produced numerous legendary vintages, with certain years achieving iconic status among collectors and enthusiasts.

With its rich history, commitment to excellence, and unique label art, Château Mouton Rothschild holds an esteemed place in the global wine market. Its wines, sought after for their quality and aging potential, stand as a testament to the Rothschild family's dedication to producing some of the world's finest Bordeaux wines.
